We study olfaction, the sense of smell.   Our goal is to describe how an external chemical stimulus (an odorant) is transduced into the electrical signal that ultimately reaches the brain.

Using electrophysiology, molecular biology, and computational modeling, we study the mechanism of odorous transduction in a vertebrate, the Northern grass frog.
